Privacy Policy

Last updated 11 October 2026

This explains what TeoLearn collects, why, how long it is kept, and what you can ask us to do with it. It is written to be read, not to be survived — if anything here is unclear, ask us.

Two things worth knowing before anything else. First, we study how people learn using the data described below, including your lessons, answers and conversations with Teo — that research shapes the product, and it is described in full in section 4 rather than buried in a definition. Second, TeoLearn does not use your camera.

1. Who we are

TeoLearn is operated from Nigeria. For the purposes of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA) we are the data controller for the information described here. If you are in the EU, EEA or UK, we apply the standards of the UK/EU GDPR to your information as well, and the rights in section 8 are available to you on that basis.

2. What we collect

We hold the following, and nothing we have not listed:

  • Account details — your email address, display name and sign-in identifiers. Sign-in is handled by Clerk; if you use Google to sign in, we receive your email address and name from Google, never your Google password.
  • What you tell Teo — the goals you type, the courses you ask for, your messages in tutoring conversations, and any files you upload.
  • Chats before you sign up — your messages to Teo on our home page. We keep them without a name or email, alongside a scrambled form of your network address used only to limit misuse. The chat isn't saved for you: once it ends you can't get it back.
  • Your learning record — lessons opened and completed, quiz and test answers, capacity and cognitive test results, streaks, reinforcement schedules, and the gaps Teo identifies in your understanding.
  • Community activity — forum posts, group membership, and anything else you choose to publish to other users.
  • Career information, if you use the jobs features — education history, employment history, projects, achievements, and your assessment results.
  • Usage and billing records — how much of your credit each request consumed, your subscription status, and payment status from Paystack or Stripe. We never see or store your card number.
  • Technical data — the ordinary server logs any website keeps, including IP address and browser type.

3. No camera

TeoLearn does not use your camera. An earlier version could pause a lesson when you looked away from the screen; that feature has been removed. It worked out where you were looking inside your own browser, and nothing from it was ever sent to us or stored.

When a lesson is read aloud, it is your browser's own voice reading the text on your device. No recording is made and no audio is sent to us.

4. We use your data for research

This is a genuine purpose, so we are stating it plainly rather than hiding it inside a longer list. TeoLearn exists to work out how people actually learn, and we study the data we hold to do that.

Specifically, we analyse:

  • which explanations lead to understanding and which do not;
  • where learners commonly go wrong, and what a wrong answer reveals about the misunderstanding behind it;
  • how well spaced repetition holds material in place over weeks and months;
  • how our teaching and question generation should change as a result.

This research improves TeoLearn for everyone who uses it. Where we publish or share anything about it — in writing, in a report, or with a research partner — it is aggregated or anonymised so that it cannot be traced back to you. We do not sell your data, and we do not share identifiable learning records with advertisers.

You can object to your data being used this way at any time, and we will exclude it, without affecting your access to TeoLearn. Email us at the address above.

5. AI, and decisions made about you

Teo is an artificial intelligence. When you are talking to Teo you are talking to software, not a person. To generate lessons, mark answers and hold tutoring conversations, we send the relevant content to model providers — currently Anthropic and OpenAI — who process it on our behalf and under contract.

Lesson content and quiz questions are generated by AI and can be wrong. Teo also evaluates your answers and uses those evaluations to decide what to teach you next, what level to pitch it at, and whether to set remedial work.

Where those evaluations meaningfully affect you, you have the right to ask for a human to look at the outcome, to put your point of view, and to contest the result. If you use the jobs features, assessments generated by Teo may be seen by the employer whose posting you applied to — we do not make hiring decisions, and employers are responsible for the decisions they make.

6. Why we are allowed to hold it

Under the NDPA, and under the GDPR where it applies:

  • To provide the service you asked for — your account, courses, lessons and progress. Without this data there is no product.
  • Our legitimate interest — improving how Teo teaches, including the research in section 4, keeping the service secure, and preventing abuse. You can object, as set out above.
  • Your consent — for anything we ask you about specifically. Consent can be withdrawn at any time.
  • Legal obligation — tax and accounting records relating to payments.

7. Learners under 18

TeoLearn is available to learners aged 13 and over. If you are under 13, you may not use TeoLearn, and we ask you not to give us any information.

If you are under 18, you need your parent or guardian to agree to these terms before you use TeoLearn, and we ask you to go through them together — particularly section 4, on research.

Parents and guardians can ask us what we hold about their child, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to it being used for research, by emailing the address above. We will act on any such request. In some countries the age at which a young person can consent for themselves is higher than 13 — where that applies to you, we rely on parental consent instead.

8. Your rights

You can ask us to:

  • give you a copy of everything we hold about you;
  • correct anything that is wrong;
  • delete your account and the data attached to it — we will do so unless we are legally required to keep something, such as payment records;
  • export your learning record in a portable form so you can take it elsewhere;
  • stop using your data for research, as described in section 4;
  • withdraw any consent you have given.

Email us and we will respond within 30 days. If you are unhappy with how we have handled it, you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, or to your local supervisory authority if you are in the EU, EEA or UK.

9. Who else touches your data

We use a small number of providers to run TeoLearn. They act on our instructions and may not use your data for their own purposes:

  • Clerk — sign-in and account security.
  • Anthropic and OpenAI — generating lessons, marking answers and running tutoring conversations.
  • Paystack and Stripe — payments. They handle your card details directly; we never receive them.
  • Our hosting and infrastructure providers.

Some of these operate outside Nigeria, so your data may be processed abroad. Where it is, we rely on the transfer safeguards required by the NDPA and, where relevant, the GDPR.

Anything you post to a forum or a group is visible to other users. That is the point of those features, but it means you should not put anything there you would not want seen.

10. How long we keep it

  • Your account and learning record — while your account is open, and for 12 months afterwards in case you come back.
  • Conversations with Teo, including chats before you sign up — 24 months, then deleted or anonymised.
  • Payment and billing records — as long as tax law requires, currently 6 years.
  • Server logs — 90 days.
  • Anonymised research data — indefinitely, because it is no longer linked to you.

11. Security, honestly stated

We protect your data with access controls, encryption in transit, and the ordinary care you would expect. But no service can promise it will never be breached, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. If a breach affects your rights we will tell you and the relevant authority without undue delay, as the law requires.

12. Changes

If we change this policy in a way that materially affects you, we will tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect. The date at the top always reflects the current version.
